At Hewens College, we give some of our more able students the opportunity to take part in The Brilliant Club’s Scholars Programme.

The Brilliant Club is an award-winning, UK-based charity that aims to increase the number of students from under-represented backgrounds progressing to highly selective universities. They achieve this by mobilising PhD students and early career researchers to deliver university-style tutoring and support to pupils in state schools.

Hewens College recently hosted a highly successful Career Day, providing students from Hewens College and De Salis Studio with the opportunity to meet and engage with a wide range of universities, colleges, employers, and industry professionals. The event welcomed representatives from Higher Education, the Armed Forces, engineering, and the creative industries, all of whom shared valuable insight and practical advice about future education and career pathways. Students demonstrated confidence and curiosity throughout the day, asking thoughtful questions, building connections, and developing important communication and networking skills. The College was also honoured to welcome the Mayor of Hillingdon, who met with students and showed support for the opportunities being created for young people within the local community. The College would like to extend sincere thanks to all visiting organisations for their time and commitment.

Tower of London Trip

Our Year 10 GCSE History students have been immersing themselves in the world of Norman England, developing a strong understanding of castle design and defensive features. This learning came vividly to life during an exciting educational visit to the Tower of London — one of the most iconic fortresses in British history. Built by William the Conqueror shortly after the Norman invasion, the Tower provided the ultimate case study for students exploring how castles were used to control, defend, and dominate. Having already designed their own Norman castles in class, students were able to see real examples of keeps, curtain walls, battlements, and defensive layouts first hand. Walking the historic walls and standing within a fortress that has witnessed nearly a thousand years of history helped students make meaningful connections between classroom theory and the real world. The experience deepened their understanding and brought their studies to life in a memorable and engaging way. This visit perfectly reflects our commitment to learning beyond the classroom — turning knowledge into experience and curiosity into confidence. A huge thank you to Ms Edwards for organising such a valuable and inspiring trip.

We had a fantastic Post 16 Options Evening organised at Rosedale College on Tuesday 4th November. The prospective students alongside their Parents, Guardians and Carers attended the evening and gained valuable insight about the courses on offer. The Rosedale Hewens Academy Trust provides their Year 11 students with all the necessary tools to prepare them for the next steps in their lives and to help make an informed decision for their future. Year 10 and Year 11 students had an incredible day taking part in mock interviews. Our business professionals were blown away by the confidence, skills, and qualities our students showcased. The day marked a huge step in preparing for life beyond college, and we are so proud of all the students who participated. Some very successful students walked away with apprenticeship opportunities which will give them a positive direction and make them ready for their bright future. A huge thank you to Mr Botham for organising the day, Ms Webb from EDT for her never ending support of careers provision at Hewens College and all the business professionals who took their precious time out to meet with our students.

We are delighted to share that our Year 7 students recently took part in a fantastic and vital workshop delivered by Carrie Reid from the British Red Cross. During the session, students learned essential life-saving skills and practical first aid tips that could one day make all the difference. From handling minor injuries to responding in emergency situations, our students are now better equipped with the knowledge and confidence to help others in need. We are incredibly proud of our Year 7 students for their enthusiasm, focus, and participation throughout the session. This valuable workshop not only empowered our students with life skills but also highlighted the importance of being prepared and proactive in any situation.

On Tuesday 1st July we welcomed Year 6 students who will join
Hewens College in Year 7 in September. The day started with
an assembly where Mrs Littlefair shared the ethos of Hewens
college with the students. After the assembly they went on the
tour of the college with our Student Ambassadors. Students
took part in various activities throughout the day. We got very
positive feedback from the students as they thoroughly enjoyed
the day and are looking forward to start their journey at Hewens
College in September.

Hewens College Student wins BRONZE at the Middlesex Athletics Championship

We had an amazing Saturday for our KS4 athletes. After shining at the Annual Borough Sports Athletics Meet, the talented Hewens College students were selected to represent Hillingdon at the Middlesex Athletics Championship competing at the worldclass Lee Valley Stadium. Kareem, Milana, Oleksandr, and Deja brought their A-game, showcasing their remarkable power, speed and determination. Milana blazed through the 100m, qualifying for the finals and securing an impressive 4th place. Oleksandr impressed in the Shot, taking home a BRONZE MEDAL. Beyond the medals, it’s about the life lessons learned—teamwork, resilience, and the excitement of competition.

Our Key Stage 3 students have been busy learning how to make pancakes as part of their Food Technology lessons. Some of the students have even been experimenting with making gluten-free, egg-free pancakes, to suit those with intolerances. The students enjoyed revisiting their gratifying cooking experiences, flipping the pancakes in the kitchen and particularly enjoyed eating their creations afterwards!

Year 9 students brought their A-game to the kitchen, crafting delicious pizzas from scratch. The students did everything from kneading the dough to topping it off with their favourite ingredients, their creativity and hard work were truly impressive. Food Technology continues to be a firm favourite at Hewens College, and our budding chefs never fail to amaze us with their skill and passion for cooking.

Our Year 9 students welcomed Hezron Brown, who led a workshop about the important topic of bullying, delivering his thought-provoking lived experience. Hezron along with Shaquil, gave inspiring speeches, strategies and advice to engage our students. He told of his journey from a homeless teenager and active gang member in Birmingham, to a professional actor, Pride of Britain award winner and motivational speaker. He told his story with complete honesty and our students were engaged throughout the assembly.

London Buddhist Vihara

This week, Year 8 students had the wonderful opportunity to visit the London Buddhist Vihara as part of their Religious Education curriculum. The trip provided a deeper insight into the teachings and practices of Buddhism, as well as an introduction to the life of the Buddha, guided by a Buddhist monk from the temple. During the visit, students participated in a calming three-minute mindfulness exercise designed to help relax the mind and foster a sense of peace. It was an enriching experience, and students thoroughly enjoyed learning more about this fascinating faith and its practices.

Our Year 9 students had an insightful and thought-provoking presentation from Generation 2 Generation, a Holocaust Education Charity. Holocaust Memorial Day is an international day of remembrance, held on January 27th. The students watched and heard emotional interviews along with the live commentary of the presenter.

STEM Programme

Hewens College welcomed members from SPARK and Volunteers from Heathrow Airport who delivered a Heathrow
STEM Generation workshop to Year 8 students. The main aim of the workshop is bringing careers at Heathrow to life (focusing on engineering, but with an awareness of the vast array of careers available) as well as using the Skillsbuilder framework to cover the skills required by employers. The students participated in an interactive challenge where they worked in teams to code a BBC microbit to navigate a Move Motor vehicle across an A2 map of Heathrow Terminal 5. Students were very engaged throughout the 2-hour session and did well in attempting to programme the vehicle to navigate the set path. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to be connected with one of the largest employers in West London, questioning the volunteers, as well as developing their skills to support their decision-making for GCSE options.

Hewens College and Rosedale College students delivered a delightful choir performance at Ashwood Care Home, spreading joy with their beautiful Christmas carols. Their melodious tunes brought smiles to the residents and filled the air with festive cheer, truly capturing the Christmas spirit. A heartfelt congratulations to all the students who participated, and a special thanks to Ms. Berrigan and Ms. Whittaker-Hurlock for their dedicated organisation of this heart-warming event.

On Wednesday 4th December, our Year 8 students enthusiastically participated in a STEM project organised by Heathrow World of Work. The task required them to work in teams of five to use block coding to program a BBC microbit, which was embedded inside a small vehicle to move autonomously across a floor mat. This hands-on challenge was not only engaging but also closely linked to the curriculum, offering students a practical introduction to coding and robotics. It was designed to inspire the next generation to explore potential careers at the airport, showcasing how STEM skills are used in real-world applications. The activity proved to be an exciting opportunity for the students to enhance their teamwork, problem-solving, and technical abilities.

Congratulations to one of our former students Chloe who is part of MasterChef The Professionals 2024! Chloe is a highly talented chef and enjoyed her Food Technology lessons at Hewens College before she attended Parkside Studio College to study hospitality. Chloe went on to study Professional Cookery at Kent College and has worked at restaurants across London such as the Michelin-starred Glasshouse, Duck and Waffle, the Georgian House and the Michelin-starred Kitchen W8.

On Friday, 22nd November, Year 7 embarked on an exciting trip to the Bank of England, where they delved into the fascinating history of the institution and gained valuable insights into how money functions in the modern world. The day was filled with exploration and discovery, offering students a unique learning experience beyond the classroom.Adding to the festive spirit, the group admired the stunning Christmas decorations as they travelled through central London, making the outing even more memorable. It was a truly enriching and enjoyable day for everyone involved.

On Wednesday 13th November students in Year 7 participated in the ‘Your Life, You Choose’ Workshop. The aim was to develop their knowledge and understanding of staying safe in all walks of society. We had guest speakers from the Metropolitan Police, Crime stoppers, MASH and Prison and Ambulance services. The students were excellent and found the workshop incredibly useful. Throughout every session student remained engaged and enthusiastic about the programme.

Sport brings people together. Hewens College and Rosedale College Year 11 students organised a football match on 6th November. The students selected their team and organised training sessions and displayed fantastic leadership. The game was played with great sportsmanship with Rosedale College being the worthy winners. In recognition of Word Teacher Day and World Mental Health Day, Hewens College students wanted to send a big THANK YOU to all the staff members who are making a difference. The students surprised teachers and support staff with delicious cupcakes that they made with the help of Mrs De Burca Wyle. It was a great gesture from the students towards the staff to make them feel appreciated.

House of Parliament

On Friday 27th September, 27 students from Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 visited the Houses of Parliament. The rainy weather did not prevent the students enjoying the sights of London before heading into Parliament, where they completed a workshop on the ‘Story of Parliament.’ Students enhanced their learning of Citizenship and History, by learning about key events such as the creation of the Magna Carta and Women’s suffrage. Once the workshop was complete, students had the opportunity to experience a guided tour of the House of Commons, the House of Lords and Westminster Hall. Students were allowed to experience the route King Charles III takes when he visits Parliament and also learnt about the role of a Lord or Baroness. Students were able to see where the Prime Minister and the Government take their seats in Parliament to govern the country. All students had a fantastic time, while learning about UK politics.
