Curriculum

All students at Hewens College have the opportunity to access a broad and balanced curriculum.

At Hewens College, we believe that the curriculum is a powerful lever by which to improve student attainment. Our curriculum aims to ensure that what students know is richly connected to other knowledge, so that they can solve problems, be creative through making new connections, and study areas in enough depth to think critically about them.

Hewens College offers a curriculum which is carefully tailored and personalised to meet individual needs. We use a wide range of teaching approaches to encourage the engagement, enjoyment and interest which are essential to good learning.  To ensure all students have equal opportunities to learn, our Teaching and Learning Associates provide expert help for students who benefit from additional support.

During Key Stage 3, all students follow the National Curriculum, which includes English, Mathematics, Science, Information and Communications Technology, Religious Education, History, Geography, French, Art and Design, Drama, Music, Design Technology, Food Technology, Physical Education (PE) and Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE). Literacy and numeracy skills are key to success and to develop these skills, students have lessons in English and Mathematics every day.

At Key Stage 4, students study English, English Literature, Mathematics, Science, Information and Communications Technology and take part in Physical Education. There are a variety of options available and all students continue to follow a course in Religious Education, Citizenship and History.  In addition, students are offered a range of vocational options, designed to be as open and flexible as possible to enable students to make choices to suit their aptitudes and interests, providing a solid base for further education and career prospects.

As a member of The Rosedale Hewens Academy Trust, Hewens College is able to offer a broad curriculum package at Post 16, which responds to the diverse needs, interests and aspirations of all our learners.

Students also enjoy excellent sporting amenities including a high-tech floodlit synthetic turf pitch, a fully refurbished sports hall, gym and yoga area.  We also offer learners an extensive range of extra-curricular activities, encompassing vocational and academic subjects, together with a series of visits and off-site events throughout the year. To support this, The Trust have built a state-of-the-art performance space, with multi-media technology, sprung floor and retractable seating, enabling our students to develop their performing talents in a 21st Century space.

We believe homework in all subjects is crucial to support learning and achievement. Coursework assignments are set for students on a regular basis to be undertaken at home so as to consolidate and extend the work completed in college; further developing key skills such as independent working, so vital to academic success.
